How Portrait Sessions Work

It's hugely important to me that we have plenty of time for our session, so that nobody feels hurried or hassled. Being relaxed is the key to creating magical images so our photo sessions usually take at least a couple of hours, often 3-4 hours for newborns. I usually photograph in the morning, when babies and children are usually at their most sparkly! It's also important for me as the photographer to earn the trust of your kiddos, as this plays a huge part in getting them to convey natural emotions in front of the camera. I tend to goof around a lot - that helps ;-)

Photographic sessions can take place either at my studio, your home, or a location special to your family such as the beach, woods or park. Magical locations can transform a portrait into a work of art that you will want to display on the walls of your home, so finding the right location is key. Kids tend to be more natural outside of the confines of a studio, so photo sessions on location in Wiltshire, Hampshire or Dorset allow for more relaxed lifestyle photography shots. Pregnancy and baby portrait photography can also be done outside, but of course this depends very much on our Great British weather.

I use natural light as much as possible, so if you'd like me to come to your home I'm more than happy to. This is often the preferred option for new mums when their babes are just days old, and they're not yet getting out and about (travel charges may apply, please see pricing for more details).

The Studio

I am very fortunate to live in an exquisite village just teeming with photo opportunities. Teffont, just west of Salisbury, Wiltshire, and very close to the Dorset border, is straight out of the history books. As well as a lovely garden to make use of, there's a babbling brook, woodland trails, bluebell woods, ancient architecture and a host of locations that make perfect spots for creating lifestyle portraits of families & children - rustic doors, gates, stone walls, orchards & meadows - it is a constant source of inspiration and I always seem to find new little spots tucked away to use.

The photography studio near Salisbury makes a warm, safe & cosy space from which we can base our portrait session and enjoy a cup of coffee while we plan our shoot. If we're not outdoors, we will most likely use the rooms in my home, a 17th century stone farmhouse, to give the images a sophisticated lifestyle feel - cosying up on the sofa or messing about on a bed help create relaxed images without the formality of a studio setup. Having tired you out, how about a bite to eat on your way home at these fabulous family-friendly pubs (The Beckford Arms and The Black Dog at Chilmark)?

What happens after our portrait session

I lock myself away in a dark room and prepare the best photographs ready for you to view, but this does take some time as I professionally retouch your images to the highest quality. We will arrange a viewing session at my photography studio near Salisbury, Wiltshire approximately two weeks after our session, where I will show you a beautiful bespoke presentation on the large screen. Afterwards your images will be available on an online gallery so family & friends can choose images of their own. I can help with the tricky decision making by showing you various framing and album options and how to present them. Families often go for a beautiful album to tell the story of their shoot, saving their favourite images to hang on the walls of their home.  As a guide, most clients spend between £500 and £2000, but I do ask for a minimum order of £200.
